LWE Podcast 23: Aki Latvamäki

Few artists come from as genuine and distinct a perspective as Finland’s Aki Latvamäki. In his bio he speaks of dirt, and in the following interview, he speaks of love. Working at the distant boundaries of what can only ostensibly be described as “tech-house,” Latvamäki (who also records as Artificial Latvamäki) offers up sounds that are more closely tied to experience than invention. Latvamäki’s esoterically titled tracks have appeared on Cocoon’s G compilation, Ellen Allien’s Fabric 34 mix; EPs for Trapez, Mezzotinto, and Budenzauber Recordings; as well as split recordings with LWE favorite Mark August and Dub Kult on Curle Recordings. Latvamäki is also a member of the “junk percussion” group Transistori, who have recently posted to Youtube a documentary of their live work, Transistori Play Toppilan Tehdas, at the factory of Toppila in Latvamäki’s home town of Oulu, Finland. What Latvamäki specializes in is a sound that combines melodic daring, dizzying introspection, and propulsive movement, and this talent is on display both here in this stunning exclusive “mixtape” of unreleased/forthcoming material.

.Soul (Daniel Tischer), born 1977 in Wiesbaden, Germany, now living near Frankfurt, started experimenting with electronic music in 1996. Inspired by the vibrant local scene and the sound of this time, particlularly at Frankfurt’s internationally renowned club "OMEN", Daniel began to DJ at private parties and research modern production techniques. In 2004 he organized events with friends at a club called Metro, where he also refined his skills as a dj while developing a unique voice as a producer.

In 2005 he founded the Tropic Netlabel both as a creative outlet for himself and other like-minded musicians. In 2006 D.Soul had several releases on netlabels such as Audio808, Corpid, Bumpfoot, as first non chilean artist on Pueblo Nuevo, Stratagem, ItaloBusiness and Tropic among others.

In 2007 the spanish Netlabel Inoquo was the home of his first lp and in 2008 he works on a lot of remixes for artists like Jon Doe, Carlo and Sven Laux. In 09 he has a track on a various artists compilation on the japanese label Fountain Music together with Popnoname, Dave Angel, Dj Yellow and others. Beside producing he perform in different venues like Tanzhaus West, Frankfurt, Lysa Club Erfurt, Colonial Bar Marbella, Dora Brilliant, Frankfurt and Raw Tempel Berlin and love to see people dance. As a musical principle, D.Soul always try to produce and mix a kind of colored and vivid electronic music, with it’s own stylistic flavor. Under his moniker ELATE he walks on the more housy side of music.

Archipel welcomes Japan's Sodeyama who brings us the ultra thick, molten hot percussive "Now is the time", which comes in both vocal and instrumental flavors, begins with a heavily rhythmic and rolling bass fueled pulse which provides for a solid, and yet very much fluid, foundation which is in constant evolution and is laced with the potent words of Martin Luther King, Jr. Which are nested safely within this rolling aural landscape and hypnotically are lead into a very deep section of warm, plush padding which then rushes back into action with spellbinding force. "Sea Forest" is enormously heavy and rhythmically forms a liquid romp through well kept oceanic forestry as its might suggest, wrapping the listening in a shimmering shroud of wooden melodies which roam into deeper and darker areas and eventually back into clearings of light while "Slow Mist", again as it's title suggests, lightly billows and creeps horizontally across rolling dew laced fields of tall, slender, translucent plants which shimmer with refracted and diffused dawn light, giving its surroundings a delicate but tangible glow.

After rocking appearances at DEMF and of course during NYC’s unparalleled reSolute parties, at which he resides with Connie, Elon recently travelled aaall the way to Australia to play. We are lucky enough to hold a precious recording of his set on the 5th continent. One could easily empathize with Elon as to how much he was missing his kangaroo friends and family (see picture above…)

It did not take Elon a long time to go from being a DJ to one of the most sought after emerging producers of the US scene. From an instrumental background playing the guitar and bass, supplemented with sound engineering experience, Elon created an unmistakable sound with his signature splattered reverb and juicy metallic swing, that he calls “post minimal”. His productions have been released on major labels such as Clink, Dumb Unit or Made to Play.

While many people may claim to know Chris’ sound, with their focus on continually labeling him one thing or another, Chris is equally as focused on his efforts to push back the musical boundaries. It is testament to the man that he continues to develop his sound and musical direction, after all, as the man says himself “I just like to play good underground music, I don’t limit myself.”

It is artists such as Chris Fortier who are inextricably linked to the underground dance music scene that are the genuinely pushing the sound forward. Chris’ determination to continue to push the envelope can be seen in all aspects of his career. Proof of this can be found on his recent triple CD compilation Balance and his recent solo production under the 40oz moniker and his stellar debut artist album As Long As The Moment Exits.

The Balance CD genuinely offers something exciting and underground to the current stale compilation market. Boasting tracks from across the musical spectrum like David Gilmore Girls, Global Communication and Floppy Sounds through to Slam, Matthew Jonson, Rabbit in the Moon and Bent. It is little wonder the CD was name checked for compilation of the year by numerous international press publications.

Under his 40oz production guise Chris has released the several EPs that musically could fit comfortably on labels such as Cocoon, Kompakt or Get Physical. Further remixes of Alexi Delano, Joshua Collins, Lee Burridge, Freaky Chakra and John Selway show Chris’ genre defying sound at it’s underground best. Taking this a step further in 2007, his debut artist album was released to countless plaudits and impeccable praise. With a DJ career spanning 15 plus years, he has continually been a crowd favourite, confirmed by his very first residency at the legendary “Aahz” in Orlando through to more recent residencies at The Cross in London and at Twilo in New York. Since a debut European tour in 1997, Chris has gone on to consistently tour the globe behind numerous singles, remixes and no less than 9 mix albums. You can catch him as easily in Tokyo as in Buenos Aires and all points in between on any given weekend.

This set was recorded live at Kiss & Tell (our first podcast recording from our excellent sister party) at Rose Live Music on May 16, 2009. Secrets is Matt Abbott, who also goes by Vacuum and G.O.D. (Guys On Drugs). Amongst the disco classics in this set are a ton of his own edits. The mustachioed half of secretsundaze takes things deep for RA on this week's podcast.

It's not often that we think of Giles Smith apart from James Priestley, but the duo that make up the DJing arm of secretsundaze are very much distinct characters. Smith is the deep house don, Priestley the disco diva in disguise. And while there are clearly common pockets of interest, it's clear that what they do is complementary—with few overlaps.

Smith's love of the deep kicked off in earnest via his residency for the legendary Faith parties, where he cut his teeth under the tutelage of X-Press 2 and Terry Farley. He soon left, however, to begin sundaze with Priestley, building up the brand into one of London's hottest events, and a summertime tradition for clued-up clubbers interested in coming down from a long weekend of partying. Since then, they've extended to become a worldwide phenomena, throwing parties in Barcelona, Ibiza and Miami (among other places) in addition to their usual summer schedule in the UK.

And Smith, as many of his DJ brethren have done, has also begun to produce music as well. Martin Dawson, AKA King Roc, and Smith form Two Armadillos and have had a string of releases on Dessous, Buzzin' Fly and Four:Twenty with much to come in the summer of 2009. Already released this year are remixes on Dessous and Fear of Flying and original productions—the Je Suis Differente EP and Rattlesnake 12-inch—on Sthlmaudio and Motivbank with work on BangBang! (2000 and One's new-ish house label) yet to come.

The work is, as always, defined by a deep house sound, and that's exactly what Smith provides on his RA podcast too. Detroit, New York, Paris, Amsterdam and London: Wherever there is house music being created, Smith has found it and put it in the mix. With it looking unlikely that there will be a secretsundaze, Vol. 3 CD release, consider it the next best thing.
