Crepusculum is Fred Baty, a young lad well-known to those that have been around with 12rec. for a bit longer. His “Sky Diaries" EP was a huge success back then and makes hearts melt even today. The accompanying remix album (in cooperation with Zymogen netlabel) remains one of the most elaborate projects carried out at this place ever. We are more than happy to have Crepusculum back with his full-length debut “Sing on in Silhouettes”.

Although the title might point in another direction, nobody really sings on “Sing on in Silhouettes”. Fred Baty’s intricate, neo-baroque Folk music is as instrumental as it ever was. Still, Baty enhanced his palette of instruments and while “Sky Diaries” was an unpolished diamond, “Sing on in Silhouettes” sounds rich and timeless. Crepusculum bridges from John Fahey to XTC ca. 1986, bringing forth the melodic complexity of NWOBHM-pioneers Iron Maiden without being heavy at all.
On “Sing on in Silhouettes", Fred brings to perfection what was his trademark ever since. Kitsch and emotional weight, musical craftmanship and a self-taught comprehension in harmonics setting apart Crepusculum from all guitar music you might have heard before.

Eventually, there is some singing in silhouettes. For “Abaculus Perceptive” Crepusculum joins forces with Genevieve Schwartz and Julia Kotowski (a.k.a. Entertainment for the Braindead) who give out their lovely vocal harmonies. So wow.

Our main man Scott Ferguson (he of the eight guest mixes so far, with another one ready to go soon!) has blessed us all this year with a free album as a gift exclusively to ISM readers. Scott is, of course, a bad ass producer along with his deejaying skill, and the two mixes he did earlier this year for us that included all original unreleased material were amongst the most popular we’ve offered. When he approached us about releasing this digital album exclusively through us, we jumped at the opportunity. Here’s a few words from Scott explaining his ideas behind the album “For All Days, My Blood, My Brothers”…..

‘For All Days, My Blood, My Brothers’ is a concept album which is not something I’ve done before, but wouldn’t say I won’t do again. The basic idea was to create a song for each one of my long time friends that really pushed and supported my music. I created the album in hopes that the track dedicated to each individual would be their personal favorite. And if its not, then “fuck em!” I hope you all enjoy it, happy holidays to everyone. 

As you know from his mixes, Scott has very diverse taste in tunes and that is also apparent throughout this album. Not only the deep house he is known for, this is just good MUSIC, no matter which style he tries his hand at. I am very pleased that he chose to release such a personal project through us! Ever a stickler for quality, Scott insisted that this be made available as WAV files as well as high quality 320 kbps mp3s.

My contribution to the wonderful Modyfier blog has coincided with the opportunity for me to create the first DJ mix in my new studio, in my new home, in upstate NY. Having lived in Queens, NY since 1994, I have finally escaped to the suburbs with my family. The heart of NY is not that economically viable for an artist anymore, let alone one with a family who is attempting to carve out a livelihood as a label, producer and DJ.

I decided to record this mix in real time and just let the creative muse spontaneously take me wherever it desires. Generally, most tracks that make it into my “DJ bag” are played at least 3 times, usually on a variety of systems to determine if it’s something that will work for me…and YES, I have purchased many a .wav and then discarded it after a proper listen, but thankfully in most cases it’s now possible to preview tracks in their entirety online.

I gravitated to this set of tracks in the moment because they obviously were fitting to my then state of mind and seemed like the correct choice to go with the flow of the mix. The opportunity to put together 60 minutes of music for me is a chance to escape into a magical world of music and mixing where adventure, joy, a rainbow of emotions in fact, occasionally even pain can occur. My role as the DJ is to spontaneously pull tracks and create a nonstop journey and atmosphere for the listener and myself that will hopefully transport us into that magical world rather than leave us high and dry. The imperfections, strange mixes, occasional errors and experimentation hopefully contribute to keeping it real rather than detracting from the overall vibe and intention. I had fun creating this, hopefully you will have fun listening.

The mix was performed and recorded using Traktor Pro, an Evolution UC-33 Controller, a 15” Macbook Pro, a Gigaport soundcard and a 500GB Glyph portagig drive aka DJ bag! Hope you enjoy.

A mix of top-notch original electronic music (and remixes) compliments of Berlin-based multimedia (music, painting, graphics, & photography) artist Hanne Adam who composes her music under the alias of adamned.age. Not shy about experimenting, while composing as adamned.age Hanne creates wonderful fusions of electronica, ambient, IDM, and minimal techno. Combining gentle melodies and melancholic atmospherics with crunchy percussive structure, Hanne creates her own personal blend electronic music. On occasion, she joins forces with Tanja Dovens (die minimalistin), who together form EXurban a project that delves into darker more abstract sound excursions.

The CC-licensed cover art is taken from Hanne's [FLICKR (adamned_art)] page. A beautifully textured image that in my mind reflects her music quite well. I hope that Hanne approves.

«Olah Istvan is a Hungarian musician currently living in Serbia, and he sent us this very nice EP 'Export 5' which is simply perfect for this winter times. Istvan composes since 2003 and learned from classical music teachers, until he started teaching himself in the ways of avantgarde and electro-acoustic music. He's currently starting to use new sound sources and also acoustic instruments.

'Export 5' title track is a downbeat slash ambient track, with some floating drones, whale-like sounds in the background and a mysterious, almost creepy bass line; while 'Elalvas Elott' is a true and pure ambient piece, spatious as we like them, dreamy and sleepy and synced to our heartbeat. Another solid series of deep sounds from Absys Records stable. This time, however, drum & bass gives way to a different type of music, usually defined broadly and encompassing genres like idm, ambient, breakbeat or dubstep, but at the same time always well-acknowledged by similarly different listener environments. We’re talking about “Details” LP – the newest album by the Polish producer collective known as FusionArt. Recently there have been some changes in the group – the producer duo has been joined by MC Susiah whose role is to soften the otherwise rough and austere tracks with her soft but spirited vocals, thus supplementing the already coherent whole by additional intriguing details, as it is the case with the deep, slightly metallic “Believe” or the dreamy “Details”. The album’s main asset is precisely the abundance of details that can draw the attention of the listener for a longer while and make a seemingly plain tune very interesting. It appears that FusionArt have mastered the skill of combining simple solutions with attractive ornamentation. Just listen to “Echolocation” and flow with the regular, catchy samples or relax with the melancholic, yet optimistic “Ghost” and finish the day with the sentimental and moody “Portrait”. With each track reaching for and raising different emotions, “Details” LP is another evidence for the fact that electronic music does not have to be devoid of human factor and it certainly proves that FusionArt deservedly enjoy their good reputation and what you can expect from them in the future is only the best.

This one is personal. Jørgen is one of my best friends in life. He has cancer of the worst kind possible. We were childhood friends and he taught me a lot about music and how to listen to it properly. He has a wonderful sense of humour that is impossible to explain. We spent some years apart as I travelled overseas and worked outside of Norway. One day we met at the local pub and I asked him to join me for a concert in Riga. He thought about it for about 20 seconds and said "yeah! ofcourse!". This really sums up how Jørgen is as a person. The word "no" is not in his vocabulary. Without a doubt, he is one of the most kind and understanding people I have ever met. I am proud, happy and very secure when I say that Selected Works : Volume 4 is dedicated with all my heart to Jørgen - and I wish him the very best for the years to come.

Having said this, I would like to do the following: All money earned from music sales starting today of ANY of my 6 releases so far (including 1000 dollars from allready sold music) will go towards flying Jørgen to New York City for a Mets or Yankees baseball home game in april/may 2010.

Thank you everyone for the eternal support. I hope one day I can return it!
