RA.255 Lucy

RA.255 Lucy
@StroboscopicArt
@lucy_official

A dark exploration of rhythm from the Stroboscopic Artefacts boss.

Lucy and his Stroboscopic Artefacts label are arguably the most important additions to the global techno scene in the past two years. You may have known the Italian producer (Luca Mortellaro) from his work for Meerestief Records and Perspectiv in the latter half of the '00s but it was at the end of 2009, and the founding of SA, that his name truly began to ring out across the scene. The Berlin-based Lucy assembled a coterie of artists who, much like himself, were indebted to sounds from far outside the techno canon, and went about releasing around 15 separate examples of this vision during 2010 alone. The culmination of these endeavours surfaced earlier this year in the form of Lucy's debut LP, Wordplay for Working Bees, an album RA's Andrew Ryce described at the time as "one of the most personal, affecting and diverse techno albums since Shed's The Traveller."

It's in the spaces between genres that Lucy seems to thrive and his mix for us expertly stalks these shadowy corridors—at times it's unclear whether you zoning into techno, dubstep, ambient or something else entirely.

FACT mix 241: Kryptic Minds

FACT mix 241: Kryptic Minds
@krypticminds
http://osirismusicuk.co.uk/

Dankness and fierceness aside, Kryptic Minds’ FACT mix 241 is every bit as nuanced as their own productions, with a strong, confident narrative and a spacious sound design that conspire together give it a near-cinematic quality. Listening to it, you can readily infer the kind of drum n’ bass influences that are central to Brett Bigden and Simon Shreeve’s dubstep vision: the lustrously darkside landscaping of Source Direct, Omni Trio, Photek, early Metalheadz and Reinforced. Urban music in the truest sense: inspired by, and made for, life in the city.

Kryptic Minds are perhaps best known as standard-bearers for halfstep, their 2009 debut album One Of Us (released on Loefah’s Swamp81 label) sparking renewed interest in dubstep’s rhythmic founding principles, precisely at a time when many in the London scene were opening up to the emergent sounds of funky and recombinant UK garage . It’s not that the KMs were, or are, deliberately going against the grain; they just know where their allegiances and affections lie, have little time for fashion, and have established the parameters within which their creativity best thrives.

Since 2009, Swamp81 – originally conceived to push the halfstep sound which Loefah himself spearheaded earlier in the century – has increasingly become an outlet for 808-heavy house, juke and electro-influenced music from Ramadanman, Addison Groove, Boddika et al. Kryptic Minds’ new album, Can’t Sleep, comes courtesy of Black Box, a label home to formidable 12″s from RSD, DJ Madd, Hatcha, N-Type and Cyrus. It finds them adhering steadfastly to that rhythmic tradition, but refining it down yet further to its minimalist, raz0r-sharp essence, and at the same time developing the textural and harmonic side of what they do, with a couple of ventures into out-and-out song-form.

FACT mix 241 shows you exactly where they’re at, comprised as it is almost entirely of their own productions. No less than six tracks from the new LP feature, includling Youngsta collaboration ‘Arcane’, plus seven previously unreleased dubs. The producers’ producers, Kryptic Minds are really very special, and deserving of the highest respect. Plug into their immersive, transporting FACT mix and you’ll see why.

[GEM 007] Citymouth - Holodecker EP

Citymouth - Holodecker EP
Label: Dropping Gems
Catalog#: GEM007
Format: Cassette, EP
Country: US
Released: 29 Mar 2011
Genre: Electronic, Hip Hop
Style: Instrumental, Hip Hop, Glitch, Experimental
All sounds composed and engineered by Citymouth except for elements of Sliding Down Rainbows (Nimbusfloor version) taken from the song by Gumar and his Magical Midi Band.
Artwork by Mark Junkunc
Mastered by Twerk @ Audible Oddities

In preparation for his forthcoming full-length, Dropping Gems presents resident brain-in-a-jar Citymouth’s Holodecker EP, a five track selection of new and unreleased material. Fans of his live show will recognize several reliable classics, but for the rest of the world, these tracks are an intro to the development of one of our crew’s finest.

The Holodecker EP represents an early sampling of the current satellite-relay transmissions we believe to be authored by reclusive beat-futurist Citymouth. Held within these 5 tracks are the ancestral memories of wars fought between robo-tribes (“Fingercrampz,” “Planetsquat”), miracles beheld between bulkheads (“Sepakulive”), love baked between transistors (“Holodecker”), and docking procedures choreographed between ships which have long since dissolved into the endless rings of space debris that encircle our planet (“Nimbusfloor”). The pace alternates between frenetic and contemplative, depending on which chemicals your spacesuit nutria-tube is currently feeding you. You try to turn the knob but it’s covered in grime. You expect to hear ticking but instead perceive beeping. You’re blazed in the habitat ring. You vaporize as Earth becomes a distant memory inscribed in grease upon the plate-metal wallpaper. Five tracks later you reassemble, subtly altered, and try to decide whether you’ll press rewind.

Tracklist:
1. Fingercrampz 02:00
2. Holodecker 03:22
3. Planetsquat 04:14
4. Sepakulive 03:22
5. Sliding Down Rainbows (Nimbusfloor Version) 03:10

Overcast Sound - Holding Pattern Remixes
Label: basic_sounds
Catalog#: bsc_008
Format: 3 x File, MP3, 320 kbps
Country: Canada
Released: 31 Mar 2011
Genre: Electronic
Style: Dub Techno, Minimal

A follow-up to Overcast Sound’s first ep on basic_sounds, Holding Pattern Remixes takes the title track from the original ep and offers it up for remixing by three artists who have influenced the Canadian duo.
Chicago’s Area (aka m50) extends upon the dreamy deepness of the original, pulling sounds and patterns into the foreground to create a remarkably new groove. Hailing from France, Fingers in the Noise moves things into a grittier domain with a slightly overdriven low end and filtered swells that will surely please the dance floor. The most dramatic reworking comes from Vancouver’s The Automatic Message who strip the track of the more obvious dub techno references in favour of an ever-mutating techno excursion.

Tommy Four Seven - CLR Podcast 108

Tommy Four Seven - CLR Podcast 108
@tommyfourseven

British born, Berlin based DJ, producer and sound designer Tommy Four Seven, or known to some as just T47, is at the front of the new generation of Techno artists, creating his trademark deep and uncompromising sounds. Learning to DJ from a young age, at 17, Tommy held a 2 year residency at Fire Club, London whilst appearing at legendary venues such as Fabric, The End and Turnmills. Producing was also an early interest and Tommy soon began releasing on David Duriez's, Brique Rouge and Kill Brique label, before launching his own imprint called Shooting Elvis. After studying Music Technology in London, Tommy moved to Berlin and has been steadily building his catalogue of strong, moody and hypnotic tracks such as his 2009 hit, 'Surma' on Speedy J’s Electric Deluxe and more recently, 'Sor' on CLR, not forgetting the before mysterious 'Bauhaus' project with Chris Liebing. Tommy’s approach to music is unlike a musician. Instead, he prefers to sound design, recording and sculpting elements into deep engaging atmospheres. An impressive example of this extraordinary production ethos is his upcoming debut artist album “Primate”. It will be released on CLR in March 2011, which looks set to be his landmark year.
