[Kahvi #293] Drafts On A Theme - Rush EP

Drafts On A Theme - Rush EP
Label: Kahvi Collective
Catalog#: #293
Format: 9 x File, MP3, EP, 320 kbps
Country: Finland
Released: 26 Jul 2010
Genre: Electronic
Style: Electro, Downtempo, Ambient

Time to show the skills of a new artist this time around on Kahvi. Drafts on a theme is one of the few UK artists that appear on Kahvi.

With his own mix of 'lounge vs electronic' work, his style is one of the familiar - yet, there are elements brought into the tracks that make them fresh and sparkling.

We've got the good, solid beats of 'don't be so picky' to the more surreal '74', and then the sublime Cloudnine airship which definately has some element of Boards of Canada in there somewhere.

An interesting, thoughtful and definately listenable premier for Drafts on a theme. Too many tracks to recommend in this release, but for some great ambience give 'Eno Tribute' a listen. Enjoy!

[Kahvi #291] Torley - Ambitizers

Torley - Ambitizers
Label: Kahvi Collective
Catalog#: #291
Format: 8 x File, MP3, 320 kbps
Country: Finland
Released: 14 June 2010
Genre: Electronic
Style: Ambient

If you've been following releases of late, you'll remember Torley from the popular VA recently put out 'Serenity'. Torley was one of the hidden wonders of the release, and I thought it would be nice to get a dedicated ep out featuring his work.

As mentioned in release #290, this release can be played alongside, the tracks in any order, creating an entirely different feeling - think of it as a kind of 'personalised' release. Give it a try and see what I mean.

Ambitizers is a smooth, flowing, indulgent trip through the realms of ambience (with minimal beats here and there).

This eight track release (playtime around 30 minutes) continues the high quality, desirable vibes we heard in Serenity but advances the theme - more depth and atmosphere throughout.

Tracks of choice: Desked (that beat should really last longer), Otoro (is it just me, or does this make you think of 'The Last Ninja' from oldskool gaming days?).

Tracklisting:
1. Desked 03:08
2. Magic Hours 03:38
3. Satura 03:52
4. Vanishing Playground 02:46
5. Otoro 03:15

[Kahvi #289] Wolandroid Feat. Lynny - Bright Light Closed Eyes

Wolandroid Feat. Lynny - Bright Light Closed Eyes
Label: Kahvi Collective

Format: 6 x File, MP3, 320 kbps
Country: Finland
Released: 17 May 2010
Genre: Electronic
Style: IDM, Downtempo
Credits: Artwork By [Cover] - Zombilla

Slightly more mainstream is the mood of the next release. A new artist in the shape of Wolandroid, who is, in fact, a friend of fellow Kahvi artist Weldroid. Not entirely sure what the similarity of the artist names signifies but they do say that impersonation is the sincerest form of flattery (or something like that).

I guess the closest you could get to Wolandroid in comparison would be U97 (back in the early 90s) in the dance and techno circuits. And yes! Vocals make a comeback @ KahviHQ but once again only in a special case. This can be seen as such a special case, with nice sounds throughout, 'suitable vocals' (unlike many a early 90s track I could mention) which actually give something to the tracks.

A nice release, short but sweet and well worthy of several listens, if not adding to your permanent playlist.

Tracks of mention: Finding rapture, the oddly named 'Night falls down (?)' and I've lost (which sounds amazingly similar to Alpha Conspiracy). Have fun!

[Kahvi #288] Polygon Ring - Songs From The Season Labs

Polygon Ring - Songs From The Season Labs
Label: Kahvi Collective
Catalog#: #288
Format: 16 x File, MP3, 320 kbps
Released:  03 May 2010
Genre: Electronic
Style: IDM, Downtempo, Ambient

A while back listeners of the podcast got a preview of releases to come - of which one track was from a live set by Polygon Ring.

After convincing the man that it was worthy of a seperate release, this 16 track album is the result.

Taking the basic live set as a starting point, the album has evolved into an almost entirely new entity. With a serious Boards of Canada edge appearing on some of the tracks (northwest showers being a true example of Boards style melodica and relatex to name a couple) there are refreshing tracks like 'a most unusual camera' which has one of the most additive arpeggios of late.

Watch out for a remix of a track from our very own Sektor - 'Loki' (not to forget that Sektor has two albums out on itunes via Kahvi commercial which are well worth a download)

Additional credits for this release: Mastering by Christopher Leary at Melograf Mastering, except track 10 mastered by Twerk at Audible Oddities and cover artwork by Alex Varanese

[Kahvi #285] Jim Black - Yoctosecond

Label: Kahvi Collective
Catalog#: #285
Format: 6 x File, MP3, 320 kbps
Released: 19 Mar 2010
Genre: Electronic
Style: Techno, IDM, Electro

A new release and a new guest artist. Jim Black arrives on Kahvi shores from the UK and keeping up with the traditional profile of UK artists, his release is slightly different from the norm.

Abstract electronic is how Jim describes his music and I would go further in saying that it ranges from fast beats to the more analogue retro feel. A classic example of analogue meeting modern style is Electro basement, whereas Stark Reality dives into the realms of oldskool techno.

An interesting six track ep to go with the groove of the existing Kahvi releases, easy listening and refreshing in parts. Worth checking out.

(Kahvi #284) Casimir's Blake - Ejecta Nebula

Casimir's Blake -  Ejecta Nebula
Label: Kahvi Collective
Catalog#: #284
Format: 5 x File, MP3, 320 kbps
Released: 19 Feb 2010
Genre: Electronic
Style: IDM, Downtempo, Ambient

Back in release #269 we featured a previously unknown artist - Casimirs Blake - with a highly inspirational ep in the style of Global Communication. Ambient and relaxed, it was an audio treat for any ambient fan.

This time around, Casimirs Blake has tried something new. Beats. And lots of them.

A short but sweet ep of five tracks, around 20 minutes playtime greets you with Ejecta Nebula. Even the name strikes you as fast paced and hectic, and the ep doesn't disappoint. From the ambient passages in Fomalhaut Part 1 and 2 to the energetic and extremely high powered escaping wolf rayet, the ep constantly surprises.

Several of the tracks, with their slightly electric guitar sounding riffs, remind me of the days of Sky and its Toccata.

Enjoy this cool and sophisticated ep from certainly one up and coming artist to watch out for.

Note: Check out a promo video for an up and coming track 'Lektrali' in HD, well worth a watch and listen.

Catalog#: #283
Format: 5 x File, MP3, EP, 320 kbps
Country: UK
Released: 24 Jan 2009
Genre: Electronic
Style: Downtempo, Ambient

Its been a while since the last Kahvi release - a few things have changed since 2009. Kahvi HQ is now in another country and major upheavals behind the scenes caused releases to be shelved for a while, hence the rather large gap between the Xmas release and now.

Anyway, the wait was worth it! We're back with another release by the highly acclaimed 'Polaski'.

Much akin to his previous release 'Bendii Syndrome' (one of the highest acclaimed premiers on Kahvi in recent years), here we have another five tracks for your indulgence. Similar in texture and production to Bendii, 37 ways is a smooth and velvet journey into the realms of IDM (mixed in with a touch of acoustic for good measure).

Keeping it simple is the key - and 37 ways does that with elegance and style. Enjoy this new release, the first of 2010!

Finally the Christmas release for 2009 is here, and I'm very happy to welcome to Kahvi - Cell.

Continuing the relationship between Kahvi and Ultimae (probably the worlds best independent ambient electronica label) Kahvi presents a 5 track ep (playing time 47 minutes!) from Cell - a sampler of some of his most well known tracks from the Fahrenheit Project albums and an exclusive track from his new album 'Hanging Masses'.

Its been a little quiet on the Xerxes front lately. If you've been keeping an eye on his website recently, you will have found a huge amount of works available including an entirely unreleased selection.

The Xerxes Christmas box draws on three of the most recent releases - Selected Works volume 1 and 2 and Unreleased 2009. And being one of the most productive musicians on the scene, theres also a Selected works volume 3, having just appeared from the wings.

Xerxes hosts his music at Bandcamp, which encourages you to donate any amount to enable the downloading facility - if you enjoy this (relatively small) selection, why not visit xerxes-music.com and donate some cash to a worthwhile artist to get the rest of the tracks from these albums?

Anyway, as for this 'Christmas selection box', there are 16 tracks in total, which makes for 77 minutes of continuous music. And the tracks are fabulous, festive and highly enjoyable.

Label: Kahvi Collective
Catalog#: #kahvi277
Format: MP3, 320 kbps
Country: UK
Released: Nov 2009
Genre: Electronic
Style: IDM, Ambient

A while back a podcast only release was featured by Acrilic Colors. Yves Klein Blue was the result of a brainstorming session, and was only intended for release as a single long mix. I liked the podcast so much, I asked Acrilic Colors to produce an ep full release, and here we have the result.

Some of the tracks are shorter than usual but also two completely new tracks have been added to give you half an hour of excellence that we're used to as heard in his previous releases.

Some background information about the new tracks written by Acrilic:

Saturn Orange and White Chalk - 'My personal tribute to the minimalist ambient pianist Harold Budd, as background soundtrack of a poem I wrote decades ago, centred around an orange sunset while a distant airplane leaves a thin bright-white trail in the blue sky'

Icarus' Feathers - 'Taking Icarus as an emblem of mans dream of flying. Is Icarus dreaming or is it real? After a short semi-ethnic intro (daydream), Icarus starts to fly over green lands, breathing the clean air and feeling the freedom he longed for, weightless through white fluffy clouds. But after some minutes the wax begins to melt and he starts to plunge in whirls. Just a white feather on the shore, swept away by calm waters, remains of that "dream".

Each being an epic in its own right, the usual excellent use of sounds and production are apparent from the start. (Kahvi 272) yard - Swaggle Dub

yard - Swaggle Dub
Label: Kahvi Collective
Catalog#: #272
Format: 4 x File, MP3, 320 kbps
Country: UK
Released: 24 Aug 2009
Genre: Electronic
Style: Techno, Acid

Its been a while since the last release from Yard. Last time we got a treat in the form of some classic styled retro techno - kind of like the missing link between early 90's techno and modern IDM. And this time we have more of the same classic styling.

This four track ep is made up of what essentially could have been heard at any rave or techno club in the early 90s. Yard has perfected the replication of the style of the bygone era, and created essentially a classic tribute to this time.

Classic sounds such as the 'hoover' (from the Roland Alpha Juno 2) are enhanced and recreated (AJ Motors), a great old TB303 bassline can be heard in the last track 'slowly never'.

Its true that this style of music might not match many of Kahvi listeners tastes, but open your mind, listen and learn some musical history.

Remix - Planet Boelex

First ran into these guys while listening to spacemusic podcast - the style of the track was instantly addictive. After contacting them they kindly agreed to come up with a release for Kahvi Collective, and here is the result!

Im Garten der Scheekugel (In the garden of the snowglobe) constists of twelve tracks of interesting and provocative tracks, simplistic beats mixed in with techno/idm influences with a slightly industrial edge. The guys in question? Das Kraftfuttermischwerk, both hailing from the former east of Germany.

Check out their bio for an in depth briefing of how they came about and their inspiration. Watch out for the special remix from our very own Planet Boelex (track thirteen).

Tracks of note: Richtung Hauptbahnhof, Nachts bei mir (which actually sounds reminicient of one of my very own tracks - Inside out) and Uhlenhorst. Translations of all track names can be found in the zips.
