[M_REC LTD 24] Max_M - Dissertation

Max_M - Dissertation
Label: M_REC LTD ‎– M_REC LTD 24
Format: Vinyl, 12", EP
Country: Italy
Released: 18 March 2015
Genre: Electronic
Style: Techno
Distribution: 712 Distribution - Berlin

Tracklist:
A  Exceeding Brightness
B1 Architectural Lie
B2 Scape Sequences

After a series of prized splits and collaborations, M_REC LTD's own Max_M returns with 'Dissertation', his latest fullyfleshed
solo effort.

'The Kidnapper Bell' was his last EP for M_REC LTD. The avid vinyl lover and collector has since put his "maximalist" values to work sharing wax with the likes of Fabrizio Lapiana of Attic Music, as well as with newcomers Wrong Assessment. Not one to rush things, 'Dissertation' then comes at a peak time for Max_M and M_REC LTD, representing the culmination of a ceaseless dedication to the type of stolid, hypnotic brand of techno intrinsic to both chief and label. "Exceeding Brightness" governs the A-side with blue blips set to a progressive chugging pace, enveloped in a trademark background of fuzzy mechanical whirrs. "Architectural Lie" then opens up the B-side with a loop of warm chords that roll into a tumult of diffused hats and jangled melodies. "Scape Sequences" concludes in a subaqueous fashion; viscous, heady and stupefying.

"Something wasn't quite right here. The room was white, cold, empty. But as he feverishly cast his eyes about, a rising panic suddenly seized his throat. Something wasn't right. He looked down to his hands, clammy and starting to tremble. Stop it, he thought. You're just being paranoid. He scaled the room again. Nothing. There was nothing here. He was completely alone. The hairs on the back of his neck began to prick, an icy finger traced the line of his spine. He was completely alone. He was alone. He jumped and turned around. Nothing. The blank, colourless walls stared back at him. Unblinking. Silent. Still. And yet… someone was watching him."

For the timely tenth edition of the Grey Series, M_Rec Ltd welcomes back Donor / Truss to the fold. Whilst Tom Russell has been lately flexing his Truss muscles with Perc and causing a furore as Blacknecks with Bleaching Agent, Donor's Greg Schappert has been busy readying his dystopic debut album, Against All. After last year's swampy Aber for their first Grey Series outing, Ash sees the production partnership revived in the form of a trio of gritty, excursive techno works. Starting with cut one on the A-side, Ash simultaneously builds and decomposes, eked along with hypnotic loops and irritated layers of noise to conclude in a creaking industrial crescendo on the B-side.

[MRECLTDGS 07] Juho Kahilainen - Dyson Sphere

Juho Kahilainen - Dyson Sphere
Label: M_Rec Ltd Grey Series
Cat.N: MRECLTDGS07
Format: 12" Vinyl
Release: December 2013

Tracklist:
A1: In Umbra
A2: Xemx
B1: Coronal Loop
B2: The Fuck Up

" There is nothing left to watch but fire and the night: circle within circle, light within light. Messages arrive in the net where discrete pulses cross. Parametal engines of joy and disaster give them wave and motion. We interpret and defeat their terms by terminus. The night? What of it. It is filled with bestial watchmen, trammeling the extremities and the interstices of the timeless city, portents fallen, constellated deities plummeting in ash and smoke, roaming the apocryphal cities, the cities of speculation and reconstituted disorder, of insemination and incipience, swept round with the dark.”

Juho Kahilainen -the man who actually inspired label owner Max_M to conceive the Grey Series sublabel- returns with a new EP of experimental excursions that delve into the darkest realms of dance music.

From the opener 'In Umbra', the sense of freedom and detachment from genres' standards and limitations is palpable. It's a tense, stripped down drum pattern that might adhere to the recent resurgence of broken beats, hosting a breathtaking and unapologetic melody from the heyday of idm that only ends in a sea of bass reverbs. Undefinable.

'Xemx' has a regular 4/4, rich with vintage analog sounds. The thick layer of spacey and sinister soundwaves that slowly grows inside it reinforces the thematic nature of the EP, inspired by the artist's emotional reflections on the "Dyson sphere", a scientific concept imagining a system of orbiting solar-power satellites meant to completely encompass a star and capture most or all of its energy output.

On the flipside 'Coronal Loop' is an exercise in analog techno shamanism. You could say that this is a friendlier track, gelid and dark, but with that forward-driving bassline that defines irresistible techno.
Closing the EP, 'The Fuck Up' is a similar experiment where the loops gets nastier, interestingly enhanced by elements of raw Detroit techno. It's mind-bending dance music dedicated to those who lose themselves captured by the properties of good techno.

Max_M and his Grey Series continue to grant freedom to artists deviating from cliches and formulas. Juho's "Dyson Sphere" encompasses that exact desire.

[M_REC LTD 19] PVS – The Fugitive

PVS – The Fugitive
Label: M_Rec Ltd ‎– M_Rec LTD 019
Format: Vinyl, 12", Digital

Released: 18 Nov 2013
Style: Techno

The newest release from M_Rec Ltd is one mean piece of techno vinyl. Hailing from Italy, Marco Piovesan follows previous releases signed under his PVS alias on Gynoid and H.omevvork with a four track 12" of no-bullshit techno. On the opener "Arsenal", an equally aggressive and groovy bass drum hosts layers of hypnotic sounds: this is a track crafted with the dancefloor in mind, a true driving force with an affective and gripping loop flow. While the darkness of the spacey soundwaves might remind the listener of the work of fellow Italian producers, the drum programming here is stomping and groovy, meant to shake. CTRLS takes this original and strips off all its lusciousness, transforming the track into a hybrid rave monster that seems to celebrate the best we've learned from the intelligence of Rephlex/Magnetic North releases, honest and excited techno.

On the flip side, "Intercellar" is a trippier affair. With its bell-driven melody almost solar, the track is an irresistible experiment where an updated soundscape pays tribute to the tunes that made our brains melt in the early 90s. Label owner Max_M grabs the opportunity and makes the remix a more muted and darker deal. Here, the bell loop meets a distorted melody making things a little nastier… composed, yet malicious.

Tracklist:

A1 Arsenal (Original)
A2 Arsenal (CTRLS Remix)
B1 Intercellar (Original)
B2 Intercellar (Max_M Remix)

[M_Rec Ltd 17] Samuli Kemppi - Parallax Of One Second EP

Samuli Kemppi - Parallax Of One Second EP
Label:  M_REC LTD - M_Rec Ltd 17
Release date: Monday 03 June 2013 (Vinyl)
http://www.mrec.it/
http://www.samulikemppi.com/

Samuli Kemppi may have begun in warm house climes as the duo Sam & Gigi, but he has since found his niche and fame sound tracking the deep and icy black recesses of space. 2009’s Komisch debut, ‘Deep Space Helsinki EP’, birthed the galactic signature that would come to define his solo techno output for labels like Prologue, Mote-Evolver and Perc Trax, meanwhile cementing his stylistic meanderings to a single, albeit flexible, narrative. ‘Parallax Of One Second EP’ is Samuli Kemppi’s third outing on M_Rec Ltd, after the full ‘Cyclic Model EP’ and remix inclusion on Ben Gibson’s ‘More Than Milk’, and sees the Fin plundering the astronomic theme once again with stellar sci-fi precision.

On the A-side: “Extragalactic” opens with swirling technoid vistas, on a wonky robo-dance floor in a future imaged long ago. Warbling chimes and tweeting astro-creatures continue to plague “Astrometric Precision”, bleating at one another on our serene shuttle through the cosmos. The B-side then takes a decided plunge with tougher piston sounds and grittier textures on “More Than Parsec” as our journey becomes more wild-eyed, concluding in the keyed radio-distress signals and itchy hats of “Less Than Planck”. I guess we’re never getting home wherever that may be, but this new universe isn’t so bad after all.

Tracklist:

A1: Extragalactic
A2: Astrometric precision
B1: More than parsec
B2: Less than planck

Grey Series 04 comes from the farthest corner of Eastern Europe courtesy of Ukrainian techno pioneer, photographer and designer Stanislav Tolkachev. Like the sullen eerie beauty of his black and white photography, Tolkachev’s music explores the darker, surreal fringes of electronic music in its purest, rawest state. Retroactive seams run through his audio and visual output to date from the grainy analogue qualities of his Detroit-facing sound, through to the classic stills that emboss his discography. They are almost one and the same, both challenging and re-contextualising the past with modern sentiment, agendas and hidden meanings pursing with intrigue and ambiguity. ‘Depth of light’ sees Tolkachev plot more intoxicating, caustic dream sequences, translating fitful night terrors into a diverse and multifunctional EP. Beginning with the woozy title track we confront fears (“Like a cat’s shadow”) and anxieties (“Break something that breaks you”) on the feverish A-side, before flipping over for reserved reprieve (“No home no flag”) and acid-washed revenge (“Don’t shit on your own doorstep”). And then we awake. Tired, sweaty, but satisfied.
