Shasta, located in Northern California and maintained by the US Forest Service of Shasta-Trinity National Forest, is the fifth largest mountain in the state sitting at just over 14,000 ft. above sea level. Although falling within the Cascade mountain range, Shasta itself stands alone, dwarfing anything within the immediate countryside. Classified as a stratovolcano, the last known eruption was believed to be in 1786. Although dormant, the next eruption will likely occur within the next couple of hundred years
