FACT mix 153: Peter Van Hoesen

FACT mix 153: Peter Van Hoesen

Peter Van Hoesen is at the controls for FACT mix 153, and it’s one to cherish.

Arguably the most exciting thing to come out of Brussels since JCVD, Van Hoesen debuted in 2006 with the Increments EP on Berlin’s Lan Muzic label, but over the past four years has moved away from the minimal sound associated with that label and instead cultivated his own deep but reliably bolshy techno style. This applies to his DJing as well: much to FACT’s delight, he’s a selector unafraid to explore higher BPMs and revel in the intensification of funk that they bring. At the risk of sounding like a middle-aged man in an Underground Resistance hoodie, this is proper techno we’re dealing with.
The main outlet for Van Hoesen’s recordings has been his own Time To Express label, which has also provided a platform for releases from fellow dancefloor idiosyncratics like Sendai, Donato Dozzy and Cio D’Or. He’s also put out records on Morse and Komisch, turning out a number of remixes as well – the most notable for us being his fierce take on Ed Rush & Nico’s industrial d’n'b classic ‘Defect’.
Earlier this year Van Hoesen released Entropic City, his debut solo artist album, recorded at his Foton Studio in Brussels. Where so many techno producers flounder when it comes to making albums, Van Hoesen gave an excellent account of himself, successfully reconciling heads-down, club-oriented material with more unpredictable and investigative pieces. A coherent artistic statement that doesn’t forget to bang when and where it matters, Entropic City will almost certainly find its way into a number of critics’ Best of 2010 lists come December.
PVH’s warmly recommended FACT mix features no less than seven of his own productions, along with a remix of his ‘Trusted’ by Berlin’s Norman Nodge. There’s also space in there for tracks from Actress, T++ and Perc. In a word: killer.

RA.168 Peter Van Hoesen

Resident Advisor
RA.168 Peter Van Hoesen

Brussels in the house! Belgian techno man Peter Van Hoesen mixes it up on this week's RA podcast.

Buzzing, blurting and bleeping techno. It's what makes the world go round for Peter Van Hoesen. The Brussels-based DJ/producer has been listening to the stuff for years in the city, in and among stints as the bass player for a band and a fan of the New Beat records that defined the city's clubbing landscapes in the late '80s and early '90s. Van Hoesen takes influence from those experiences, as well as his current work as a sound design for theater, and plugs into his passion for techno and has come away with some of the most vital work in the genre over the past few years.

Eschewing the minimal sound for something a bit funkier, and a bit closer to what he calls "mental body music," Van Hoesen's tunes have seen the light of day on his Time To Express imprint, Berlin's Lan Muzic, Morse and Komisch. We have no doubt there'll be plenty more to add to that list in the future—if Van Hoesen wants it to be so. But today we're more interested in his DJing. PVH has put together a podcast for RA which is a perfectly example of his ethos behind the decks, pushing the BPMs faster and faster as the mix goes along, leading up to a sublime climax and denouement.

LWE Podcast 25: Peter Van Hoesen

(LWE) Little White Ear Buds
LWE Podcast 25: Peter Van Hoesen
His name on the tip of many a techno aficionado’s tongue, Brussels’ Peter Van Hoesen is accountable for quite a few of the year’s most heart-racing records. With their reanimated bass lines, unremitting kick drums, and penetrating atmospherics, his productions have a functionality that can’t be denied and a presence that can’t be shaken — the perfect pairing for the “dark, sweaty venues” he mentions in the interview below. Meanwhile, choice remix recruitment and the recent release of Donato Dozzy and Cio D’Or collaboration “Menta” have upgraded his fledgling Time To Express imprint from Van Hoesen home base to a growing leader in harder techno. The busy producer, DJ, and sound engineer generously took the time to talk with LWE about his label, his work with Brussels’ contemporary dance community, collaborating with Donato Dozzy, and his upcoming album. Our 25th podcast, meanwhile, offers a fine example of Van Hoesen’s propulsive live sets and an ideal primer on the producer’s latest work.

“Time To Express. To evoke the 6 am feeling of a jackin’, bass-heavy warehouse marathon. Strobes flash, your chest is rattling, salty sweat burns your eyes and you yearn for more.”

- Tell us a few words about your mix; how and where was it recorded ?
- The mix was recorded at my studio in Brussels, using two turntables, two cd players and a mixer. The idea was to let people find out about what’s in my record bag at the moment, going from slow and deep to uptempo techno. The ideal DJ set for me is one where I can go from dubby, slow grooves to faster, more abstract techno over a period of three hours or longer.

- How would you describe a typical “Peter Van Hoesen track” ?
- Something which is always part of it is bass, be it through grumbling basslines or deep kick drums, I always find myself going back to the bass, being a bass player originally. Also, my recent tracks all have a bit of ‘dirt’ in them, for some reason I’m attracted to imperfection, so when mixing down tracks I tend to add a layer of hiss or noise via the mixing desk…it’s not always very audible, sometimes it’s hidden, but it’s always there. And lastly, as it’s techno music I’m making, there’s a fair amount of attention to rhythm of course… it’s dancefloor music after all.

- What are the future plans for your “Time To Express” imprint?
- In June there will be a release by Donato Dozzy and Cio D’Or titled ‘Menta’. Then after the summer we will release two ‘various artists’ ep’s, with new tracks and remixes from artists who previously appeared on Time To Express, as well as one or two new names. Finally there will be one more Peter Van Hoesen ep on Time To Express in 2009.

- I’ve read a few months ago that you were preparing an LP for release in November. What about it ?
- Ah, the album…It’s correct that I was preparing the album for release in November, but last month I decided to change that and take more time for it. I deleted half of the tracks and kept those ones that I felt represented my sound in a new way. The album should be more than just a collection of tracks that could have been released as seperate ep’s. A big part of the album will feature much slower bpm’s, something I’ve been interested in lately; trying to fit the Time To Express sound within slower tempo’s opens up possibilities, and I want to explore that more deeply. So right now I’m looking at releasing the album early 2010.

- Is there any chance to see you performing live in France soon ?
- There’s nothing planned at the moment, but I would love to come over. After all, I’m living in Belgium so traveling to France is easy.
