XLR8R: Mux Mool - Lady Linda

Mux Mool - Lady Linda

Be it dirty, sampled breaks or shimmery, electronic loops, the mark of a great hip-hop producer usually lies more in the bang-and-slap than notable melodies. Yet Brian Lindgren (a.k.a. Mux Mool) has no need to worry, as the Brooklyn producer is strong in both categories. His new single, "Lady Linda," makes use of all his talents as it oscillates focus between a few Boards of Canada-esque synthlines and a shuffling beat that could make FlyLo jealous. The track precedes Mux Mool's forthcoming Viking Funeral EP and his debut full-length for Ghostly, entitled Skulltaste.

XLR8R: Podcast 120 - Greena

Podcast 120 - Greena

Yes, we know. In recent months XLR8R has been on London overdrive. Normally, we try to avoid endlessly stoking the hype machine, but these Brits are just making it so damn hard. It seems like every week a new producer magically pops up out of the London underground and breaks our brains with a mind-melting new spin on UK garage, funky, 2-step, house, and whatever other urban sounds are bubbling over there. This week, you can go ahead an add Greena to the list of artists to obsess over. On this exclusive mix, the 23-year-old Londoner and Night Slugs cohort whips together the usual assortment of dubplates and unreleased tunes from scene heavyweights like Untold, Brackles, Bok Bok, and Roska, but he also stretches his musical boundaries further than many of his contemporaries will dare, slotting in vintage techno, ghettotech, upfront house, and even some grime-flavored R&B. It may sound a bit schizophrenic, but Greena weaves his way between genres with ease, resulting in one particularly potent XLR8R podcast. Words: Shawn Reynaldo

Shlohmo

Podcast 117 Shlohmo

LA native Henry Laufer may be a young fella, but the 19-year-old producer, better known as Shlohmo, has rocketed on to our radar screen in recent months with his lo-fi, psychedelic mix of abstract hip-hop, dubstep-flavored wonk, bouncy synth-funk, breezy trip-hop, and what sounds like lost gems from the mid-'90s Mo' Wax catalog. Now splitting time between San Francisco and LA, in January Shlohmo will be releasing the Shlohmoshun Deluxe mini-album, so we decided to enlist him for the XLR8R podcast series now, before dude seriously blows up. On this exclusive, hour-long mix, he puts together a sampling of his own productions with a litany of unreleased and limited-release tunes, many courtesy of his compatriots in the Wedidit collective, which Shlohmo co-founded in 2008 while still a senior in high school. As our last podcast of 2009, we're guessing this mix will appeal to fans of Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing, and LA's burgeoning beat scene while hopefully whetting everyone's appetite for more great music (and XLR8R podcasts) to come in 2010.

XLR8R: Joy Orbison "BRKLN CLLN (Michna's Brooklyn Bridge Remix)"

Joy Orbison "BRKLN CLLN (Michna's Brooklyn Bridge Remix)"

It's nice to see New York's Michna taking a stab at remixing a Joy Orbison track that's not "Hyph Mngo." That song's breakout has threatened to completely overshadow the producer's other brilliant tunes, and, here, Michna gives "BRKLN CLLN" its due by pumping up the bass and percussive elements—making his hometown-referencing version a sort of laidback banger. Hopefully we can catch this track live during Michna's short jaunt around middle-America with Rusko.

XLR8R: Star Eyes' Love from NY Mix

Star Eyes' Love from NY Mix03 Dec 2009

Until now, our City Guide podcast series has been focused on the West Coast, but we've also got plenty of love for our friends on the other side of the continent. We're sampling the sounds of New York, and who better to survey the Big Apple than our homegirl (and former editor) Vivian Host (a.k.a Star Eyes). Although she's best known for throttling soundsystems as a member of NY's Trouble & Bass crew, Host has little trouble bounding from one genre to the next. Whether it's the disco stylings of Metro Area and DFA, bass-heavy bangers from Drop the Lime and AC Slater, tropical tunes from Uproot Andy and 77Klash, hip-hop anthems from Lil' Mama and Ja Rule, or dancefloor classics from Larry Levan and Madonna, her Love from NY mix and its cornucopia of sounds capture the freewheeling spirit of New York City nightlife.

XLR8R - Matías Aguayo Podcast

Matías Aguayo Podcast
Date: 05 Nov 2009

Words: Shawn Reynaldo:
Between the rise of his Cómeme label and the release of his new album, Ay Ay Ay, 2009 has seen Matías Aguayo taking a major creative left turn. While the former Closer Musik member once made a name for himself crafting the finely tuned techno of his Cologne-based peers, he now spends his days twisting and turning the sounds of rhythms of Latin America into new-school dancefloor workouts. It's unclear whether the native Chilean is returning to his roots or simply enjoying the exploration of a new sonic palette, but we're certainly fascinated by the results. On this exclusive XLR8R podcast mix, Aguayo's penchant for experimentation continues, as he combines several of his own productions with everything from classic cumbias to Latin-flavored flea-market finds.

XLR8R: Zombie Disco Squad Podcast

Zombie Disco Squad Podcast
Date: 29 Oct 2009

The boys of Zombie Disco Squad with questions for our weekly Inbox feature. While that displayed Lucas Hunter's and Nat Self's lighter side, we figured the only way to really showcase their hip-hop-flavored and tropical-tinged house sound was to enlist their DJ services for the XLR8R Podcast series. Much like the London duo's oft-spun releases on the venerable Institubes, Dirtybird, and Made to Play labels, the mix finds the guys going heavy on percussion and always keeping things upbeat. Perhaps that's why Made to Play boss Jesse Rose has made Zombie Disco Squad the resident DJs at the Made to Play night at Berlin's Panorama Bar and tapped them to put together a mix for his upcoming two-disc label compilation, Playing Around Again, which drops next month.

Tracklisting:
01 Eazy E "Sippin on a 40" (Death Row)
02 Gregor Salto feat. Thais "Thais (Funkin 3am Matt Remix)"
03 Julio Bashmore "Um Bongos Revenge" (Dirtybird)
04 Rene Amesz & Mastiksoul "Swaffel (Honey Dijon Remix)" (4Kenzo)

XLR8R Podcast: Kode 9's Bubble 'N' Squeak Mix

XLR8R Podcast
Kode 9's Bubble 'N' Squeak Mix
Date: 15 Oct 2009

When it comes to dubstep and the outer fringes of UK garage, few names ring out quite like Kode9. Next week, the Hyperdub label head will release 5, a two-disc compilation that both looks back at the influential label's history and lays the groundwork for its future. To help commemorate the release, we asked Kode9 to submit something for the XLR8R podcast. Apparently, 5 has put the man in a historical mood, as he delivered this Bubble 'N' Squeak Mix, comprised entirely of classic UK garage and 2-step from 1999-2002. Originally aired as part of the special 25th-Anniversary broadcast of Radio Lancashire's On the Wire, XLR8R and Hyperdub are now making it available as a proper download.

Roska Podcast

XLR8R
Roska Podcast
Date: 01 Oct 2009

Anyone who's read our current cover story knows that we here at XLR8R are digging the underground sounds of London and all the ways that UK funky is intermingling with dubstep, house, and other genres. Leading the way are artists like Cooly G, Geeneus, and the author of this week's podcast, Roska. In the span of just a handful of releases and remixes, many on his own Roska Kicks & Snares imprint, the man born Wayne Goodlitt has developed a trademark sound, highlighted by hard-hitting, syncopated drum beats and a proclivity toward upfront percussion. This mix finds Roska combining many of his own creations with a mixture of unreleased heaters and a few of this nascent scene's biggest tunes.

The Heatwave's Funky Bashment Mix

The Heatwave's Funky Bashment Mix

Date: 24 Sep 2009

Recent months have seen a whole lot of hullabaloo surrounding the burgeoning UK funky house scene (including our current issue's cover story), but significantly less attention has been given to how these rhythms are intermingling with the world of dancehall. In search of more information, not to mention a sampling of new music, we turned to The Heatwave, the London-based DJ and production crew headed by Gabriel Myddelton that has spent much of the decade firmly planted on dancehall and reggae's bleeding edge. Besides running a highly informative blog and frequently performing around the UK, The Heatwave also hosts a weekly show on pirate radio mainstay Rinse FM. Airing on Thursdays from 1-3 a.m. GMT and featuring plenty of dancehall, the show has also become a premiere showcase for funky bashment, the combination of dancehall MCs with riddims both pilfered from and inspired by the world of UK funky. If the idea of heavy hitters like Busy Signal, Sean Paul, Vybz Kartel, and Warrior Queen spitting over tropical beats from Crazy Cousinz and Hard House Banton gets you excited, then this exclusive mix, composed almost entirely of unreleased tunes, is not one to be missed.

Move D Live in Portugal

XLR8R
Move D
Live in Portugal

September 17, 2009

Veteran house DJ and producer David Moufang, better known as Move D, is a hard man to pin down, so when he offered up a portion of a recent live set for the XLR8R Podcast, we jumped at the opportunity. Recorded over the summer at Plano B in Portugal, this set features the Heidelberg, Germany native weaving his way between cuts both classic and cutting edge, which isn't exactly surprising given the wealth of knowledge he recently dropped in our Five Star feature. After more than 15 years in the DJ game, Move D could survive on reputation alone, but the man remains firmly rooted in the underground.

If you like what you hear, you may want to consider heading up to Seattle at the end of this month to check out a rare Move D appearance in North America—he'll be taking part in the Decibel Festival alongside dozens of other top-shelf electronic acts, such as Mala, Benga, Caspa, Mary Anne Hobbs, Martyn, Daedelus, Gaslamp Killer, Nosaj Thing, Alter Ego, The Wighnomy Brothers, Lusine, and many more.

XLR8R - Untold Podcast

XLR8R
Untold Podcast
Date: 10 Sep 2009

XLR8R recently took a closer look at U.K. producer Untold (a.k.a. Jack Dunning), whose handful of releases on Hessle Audio, Hotflush, and his own Hemlock imprint have quickly established him among a handful of artists pushing dubstep beyond bass-in-your-face nonsense. We figured that if anyone was going to provide a look at where the genre was headed, it would be Untold, so we enlisted him to put together this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Taking an open-minded approach and liberally utilizing his stock of unreleased tunes, Untold slots heady and experimental tracks alongside animated dancefloor cuts, and even finds time to dabble in some classic house and B-more club. If this mix is any indication, dubstep's future remains bright.
