@_beginnings is the alias and solo project of experimental musician Jon Frost, who creates drifting soundscapes with electric guitar and laptop synths. On this his first official release, Jon adopted a semi-improvised approach by recording passages of solo guitar on-the-fly, then later arranging them with electronic layers of tone, harmony and noise to create a sound that is full of shifting textures and ambient melancholy, designed to accompany the waiting moments of any given day.

Earth Mantra is very pleased to welcome Ronny Jung of :retreat: to our netlabel, with his wonderfully deep minimal ambient album Lordes.

We've mentioned many times how much we enjoy meeting new artists and hearing new music, one of the true benefits of running a netlabel. Likewise, one of the joys of releasing ambient music is that every album is so distinct, with such a unique sound, feel, and musical approach. With Lordes, we are reminded again of how sweet it can be, for this is an album of truly profound ambient drones unlike any we have heard before.

Ronny produced this album from a collection of recordings he made, some field recordings, and others recordings of him playing Tibetan singing bowl, didgeridoo, small bells, singing glass, torn paper, and even a growling stomach. He recorded all of this material and then brought it into the computer, where he processed it in various ways, layered the resulting sounds, and blended it all together into "a general picture hopefully aesthetical". We're still trying to figure out which song has the growling stomach on it.

The music is supremely droney, a reflective study of minimal composition, with long, slow pulsations ebbing and flowing like a vast field of ponderous benthic molten lava. Ronny is careful to avoid any explicit thematic content in his music, preferring instead to allow the listener's imagination to interpret the music however it likes, but to us this music is like the soundtrack to the abyssal plain, a colossal stretch of uninhabited space miles below the surface of the ocean, particularly the seismically active parts of the plain, where crustal plates grind against each other, magma seeping out between the cracks and instantly cooling to form organic structures of rock. But that's just what we see when we listen to this enigmatic release. The beauty of :retreat: is that you can let your mind explore while listening, allowing your imagination free rein. With music as fathomless as this, such an adventure is a pure joy indeed.

So it is with great pleasure that we welcome Ronny Jung, aka :retreat:, to Earth Mantra, with his excellent new album Lordes. May it be only the first of many such excursions of the imagination.

Noisy beats and progressive ambient movements comprise the basis for this piece. Implementing samples from roughly twenty 78rpm vinyl records, the album is a bold step forward, following the same 70s/80s grimy late-night theme found so prominently in Vektordrum's previous album, Discrete Night Signals. A fresh amalgamation of scratchy horror film samples with a heavy deviation from anything Vektordrum may have once been.

Some artists are just naturally in a zone, and clearly Darren Harper is one of them. His latest release, a collection of textural ambient sound sculptures called Descend, is a perfect case in point.

Darren has long impressed us with his tremendous skills in the worlds of sound design and abstract compositional structure, something you might have noticed by our very complimentary writeups on his other Earth Mantra releases. With Descend, Darren has created an album that is truly one of our favorites, a musical journey that leads the listener through five pieces of deep immersion and entrancing ambience.

The music on Descend is very droney, with long sustained waves of sound crashing on the virtual beach, and as usual Darren amazes us with his unique ability to balance the tonal and atonal elements into something that is greater than the sum of its parts. There are a lot of people who are good at sound design, Darren among them, but what really sets him apart is how tastefully he can make something abstract have tonal nuances, and how effortlessly he can make something tonal have abstract overtones. At times, the subtlety is overwhelming; how can someone take such minimal sounds and combine them in such an uncluttered way, and yet produce something that has so many details waiting to discover? Remarkable work, by an artist at the very top of his game.

So it is with great pleasure we introduce Descend by Darren Harper, the next episode in his journey through the world of ambient music. Highly, highly recommended.

"The first release on the Audio Gourmet netlabel is from label owner Harry Towell under his Spheruleus guise. As Spheruleus, Harry has recently had a limited-run CD album released on Under The Spire (http://www.underthespire.co.uk/) and has another forthcoming on Hibernate (http://www.hibernate-recs.co.uk)%20this/ fifteen minute E.P showcases his typical production approach and sits somewhere in between the different styles of sound design to be heard on these two CD label releases. For the Rust E.P, Harry has fused treated instrument takes of zither, vibraphone, guitar, trumpet and harmonica with drones and field recordings. The mood of the E.P is light and mellow; designed as an audio representation of the rust process. It would have been all too easy to portray this with a much darker approach to sound art, but instead the pieces sound as if content to 'rust' away slowly as time elapses. The process of rusting is a slow and subtle degradation of a building, vehicle or object as it gradually head towards uselessness. This ageing process sits in line with the ephemoral existence of the physical human being and in many ways, our metallic creations reflect our own temporary lifespan. The very nature of ephemorality can be a saddening and daunting fact but when accepted, the mere simplicity of existence can be truly savoured for what it is.Don't be bogged down with the unnecessary clutter that we humans weigh ourselves down with and enjoy one of life's most basic yet vital requirements - to draw breath and exist."

For the second Audio Gourmet release, we welcome talented American ambient artist Darren Harper to our roster. Darren has had (3?) albums out on the Earth Mantra netlabel to date (http://www.earthmantra.com/) and another due out this month. He's also got work out on and collaborates with Jacob Newman under the guise Frequent Sync. To assist his forthcoming full album release on Earth Mantra, he has treated us to this exceptional E.P of top drawer ambient music.
First up, 'Fields and Glass' serves as the darker half of the E.P, fusing environmental field recordings from the far east with a complex and eerie drone. Darren used these open-source field recordings as part of an 'unconscious collaboration' with his unsuspecting studio partner to tap in to the recording environment, by adding his own atmospheric interpretation of the recorded events. There are a lot of open-source sounds available from around the world and it is fascinating to think that these recorded fragments of time can be used freely for artistic expression by artists that have never met the person behind the source.
The second track on the E.P is entitled 'Leaves and Piano' and features a delicate looped piano composition with restful drone accents. This piece is incredibly beautiful and its flowing, subtle repetition of the piano loop guides the mind to a lulling meditative state.

Darren Harper is a highly talented artist and a name to watch out for. His work continues to better itself with each release; Audio Gourmet is delighted to include this magnificent E.P to its catalog of releases. Enjoy...

Damian is a multi-instrumentalist from Canada and throughout his discography you will find that he is more than capable of producing various types of electro-acoustic/ambient music to a very high quality. A testament to this is the fact that 'Bow Echoes' has surpassed the 30,000 download count!
For his E.P on Audio Gourmet 'In The Shadows Of The Occluding Body', Valles has explored darker territory than in previous releases. Throughout this atmospheric 2 track journey, the overall listening experience is riddled with a sense of doom as Damian explores an array of carefully sculpted guitar-based drone textures.
This really is an excellent peice of work and we are extremely pleased to be able to bring it to your ears through Audio Gourmet. Earth Mantra has long been a big fan of the various electronic music made by Moscow-based artist Evgenij Kharitonov, who records intriguing and boundary pushing ambient space music under the name EugeneKha. But with his latest release, called Mantra of Space Monks, we feel he has produced his best work yet, an album of truly immense significance.

EugeneKha has always been about sound design, and about fusing together disparate elements to create what we might term 'progressive ambient' music. With his latest work, he continues to polish the sculpture and texture of the sound, but he has eschewed rhythm and pulsation, focusing instead on deep and entrancing ambient elements that combine to form some of the most immersive space music we've heard in awhile. And yet, despite its mesmerizing aspects, the music retains Evgenij's signature ability to bend familiar sounds into new and unique devices that are both immediately approachable and yet distinctive and refreshing. Imagine if Boards of Canada slowed themselves way down and took a deep dive into pure beatless ambience. Now combine that with elements of Eno and a strong sense of traditional space music, and you have a glimmer of understanding of the type of material you might find in this delicious album.

We've heard a lot of superb pure ambience from EugeneKha before, but we are struck by the great patience and minimalism of pieces like The Calmness Sea and Ethereal Drone, tracks that really showcase the artist's mastery of the ambient form and demonstrate how he has found a zone of truly placid and soothing ambient composition that only some of the masters of the genre have previously encountered. With such profound subtlety and grace, we sincerely believe this is an album that will stand the test of time, and certainly one of the top releases of 2010.

So it is with great pleasure we unveil the latest Earth Mantra release by EugeneKha. We hope Evgenij continues in this direction, and continues to share with us his extraordinary musical vision.

We are proud to receive again the work of Australian artist Philip Sulidae. After his first release in Audiotalaia (Southwest) Sulidae presents "Meetings With Half Light" a 5 track EP in which we can find a beautiful gathering of drones, soundscapes and textures.

As always the consistency of Sulidae's work can be seen widely on this 31st release on the label. Sulidae performs here with accuracy and solemnity trying one more time to build a sound space always referring metaphorically to experienced situations confronting nature and landscape.

It's interesting to remark the combination of electronic drones and field recordings. Sulidae is a composer that plays with multiple layers of sound textures building a slow pace in which the scenes and sensations are appearing in front of you as if the weather were changing slowly.

Again this is a perfect example of ambient music ready to be heard outdoors, on a top of a hill expecting the sunset to take off.

The Rantum-Crew and their tracks, thats a never ending story! I remember this one here from one of their very first tapes, around 1993, or something. It was a lovely tune by then, and it is still! Thrash-Can beats, sad and lost trance chords, all-consuming noise, this fast changing track has it all. It says rather clearly "Wake up, rave is over, time to get home".
