Mux Mool - Drum EP 2

Mux Mool - Drum EP 2
Label: Moodgadget
Catalog#: none
Format: File, MP3, Donation-Only EP
Country: UK
Released: 21 Jan 2010
Genre: Electronic, Hip Hop
Style: Instrumental, Hip Hop, Synth-pop
Artwork by: Hydro74

From Mux Mool:
I made the first Drum EP in 2007. At that time I wasn't sure if I was going to continue making beats at all. I had only released one song, and despite how well "Lost and Found" had done, I just wasn't sure if this was the path I was going on. A good friend of mine, Medium Zach from Big Quarters suggested I challenge myself to make one beat every day for a week. I took him up on his challenge and did just that. 7 lo fi hip hop beats.

In 2010 I found myself in a similar funk, only this time I was traveling quite a bit. I decided that I wanted to challenge myself again. This time, I couldn't really do 7 songs in 7 days, and I wanted to improve in quality from the songs on the first Drum EP, but stay true to the nature of beat-making challenges. So, this EP is all songs I made while on a plane.

[GI-119] Shigeto - What We Held On To

Shigeto - What We Held On To
Label: Ghostly International
Catalog#: GI-119
Format: 5 x File, MP3
Country:
Released: 20 Jul 2010
Genre: Electronic, Hip Hop
Style: Abstract, IDM, Experimental
Credits: Artwork By - Mike Cina

Zach Saginaw’s releases as Shigeto are more than just pieces of music—they’re chapters, carefully laid building blocks of a narrative that spans the artist’s increasingly impressive body of work. Building a sonic bridge between the Semi-Circle EP and the upcoming Full Circle full-length, Shigeto’s What We Held On To EP is the next installment in the artist’s ongoing treatise on his family’s troubled history, as well as a free taste of what’s to come from the prolific Brooklyn producer.
What We Held On To is both simpler and heavier than its predecessor, with Shigeto paring his tracks down to their essentials and adding a dollop of blown-speaker low end; it’s also a bit more melancholy, owing to the addition of a few elegantly disheveled vocal samples and liberal use of piano. “After She Smokes” matches a sinister metallic “shhhing!” (Swords colliding? Knives sharpening?) to an elegiac singing voice and a series of swelling synths—certainly one of Shigeto’s prettiest moments—while “Bitter Sweet”’s stuttering boom-clap and machine-like hums alternate with more doe-eyed vocals and a touch of understated bossa-nova cool. The EP’s second half is darker than the first, as the overdriven digital menace of “What We Held On To” leads into “Grandma’s Words / Rise Out of the Stone”, a two-part invocation of Saginaw’s grandmother’s experience as a Japanese-American during the horrors of WWII.
The central mystery with What We Held On To, of course, is the title’s unspecified “what”: what exactly, we’re meant to wonder, did they hold on to? As Shigeto moves steadily toward his full-length debut, he’s been holding on to his family history, bringing that chapter of his musical mission to a close; he’s also holding on to his grandmother’s upright piano (the moody chords of which appear throughout the EP), her last remaining worldly possession after her internment in the US. What We Held On To represents the final piece of Shigeto’s longstanding obsession; on Full Circle, his upcoming full-length, the young producer finally lets go.

Tracklist:
1 Spring Textures 3:21
2 After The Smoke 3:10
3 Bitter Sweet 2:18
4 What We Held On To 4:07
5 Grandma's Words / Rise Out Of The Stone 8:09

Ann Arbor's Zach Saginaw aka Shigeto is the latest young beat hypnotist to make the friendly jump from Moodgadget to Ghostly, where he'll release a new full-length, Full Circle, later this year. To grease the introductory palm, Ghostly's letting go of Semi Circle, a five-song primer on the marshy, headspinning rhythm jungle this dude so obviously thrives in. He's a monster behind a traditional drum kit, too.

The Sight Below - Process Part 200 (live at the seattle art museum)
modyfier

Live sets are usually tricky to translate into a recording. Most likely when any artist is mixing live electronic music, the tendency is to adjust the sound and balance of instruments according to the acoustics of the room, the speakers available and setup (stereo, quad, etc) and multiple other factors (like the number of people in the room). Ultimately, what sounds great live might not sound that interesting when you record straight from the main soundboard and play it back at home, in headphones or home stereo system. It is one of the main reasons I seldom record live sets – they just rarely translate well into the recorded format. I remember last year somebody recorded a bootleg of our set at Sonar festival in Barcelona. It’s been floating on the Internet for a while and I must say it’s a pity, as it is definitely not representative of what we sound like in a live setting. Part of the beauty of live performance is the physicality of it –like when listening to a very dense, textured wall of guitar noise with sub frequencies at 120db’s…ah, beauty! Read more...

XLR8R: Mux Mool - Lady Linda

Mux Mool - Lady Linda

Be it dirty, sampled breaks or shimmery, electronic loops, the mark of a great hip-hop producer usually lies more in the bang-and-slap than notable melodies. Yet Brian Lindgren (a.k.a. Mux Mool) has no need to worry, as the Brooklyn producer is strong in both categories. His new single, "Lady Linda," makes use of all his talents as it oscillates focus between a few Boards of Canada-esque synthlines and a shuffling beat that could make FlyLo jealous. The track precedes Mux Mool's forthcoming Viking Funeral EP and his debut full-length for Ghostly, entitled Skulltaste.

Osborne: "Afrika (Bullion Remix)"

Detroit's Osborne released his self-titled debut album in 2008 and he returns next month with The Ghostly Remixes, an album of re-workings of tracks from that first LP. The opening cut, UK producer Bullion's re-imagining of "Afrika", drifts easily on a playful bass line and a subtly engaging beat.

(GI-98) Mux Mool - Viking Funeral EP

Mux Mool - Viking Funeral EP
Label: Ghostly International
Catalog#: GI-98
Format: 5 x File, MP3, EP, 320kbps
Country: US
Released: 02 Feb 2010
Genre: Electronic
Style: Instrumental, Hip Hop, Wonky

Culled from Mux Mool’s EPs, mixtapes, and beat vaults, the Viking Funeral EP collects five choice Mux cuts into one concentrated blast of music, an introduction to Brian Lindgren’s dazzling take on homespun electro hip-hop and a preamble to his upcoming full-length opus, Skulltaste.
Viking Funeral contains everything that Mux Mool does best, making it a fine road map to Lindgren’s cracked universe. “Teal Trim” starts things off right with a tight, incisive beat, mixed to cut through a fog of hard-panned synths and distorted melody lines. Mux’s live edit of “Ladies Know” is a hard-to-find instrumental version which foregrounds the track’s bitcrushed drums and dirt-crusted vocal samples. Next up is “Drum Babylon”, a highlight from Mux’s song-a-day project Drum EP, and “Goblin Town”, a mischievous interlude featuring a choir of deep-voiced goblins, singing about their hometown. The Viking Funeral EP closes with its lone track with vocals, “Death 9000 (Prof & POS Broadcasting Version)”, in which the MCs have their way with one of Mux’s more sinister beatscapes.
Five tracks, five different shades of Mux; but the Viking Funeral EP is just the tip of the iceberg. Skulltaste is lurking below the waterline, and it goes down for miles.

1 Teal Trim [Edit]
2 Ladies Know [Live Edit]
3 Drum Babylon

(GI-95) Syntaks - Mistral Moon

Syntaks - Mistral Moon
Label: Ghostly International
Catalog#: GI-95
Format: 2 x File, MP3, EP, 320kbps
Country: US
Released: 06 Oct 2009
Genre: Electronic, Rock
Style: Shoegaze, Ambient
Notes: Released as a free download from the record label website.

Syntaks’ Mistral Moon EP is a free taste of the Danish duo’s full-length Ylajali, comprising two tracks of Syntaks’ densely layered ambient pop. Syntaks’ songs are textural epics in miniature, meticulously detailed shoegaze symphonies built from Anna Cecilia’s wordless vocalizations and Jakob Skott’s breathtaking production. “Sudden Dream” grows from a puddle of Cecilia’s molten coos to a towering climax worthy of M83’s overdriven majesty; “Mistral Moon (Illuminated Version)” presents a slightly sweetened rendition of the Ylajali standout, matching a triumphant melody and heavy-footed beat with distant stutters of distortion and oceans of atmospheric rumblings. To call Syntaks’ music “cinematic” would be an understatement—with the Mistral Moon EP, the experience is as visceral and surreal as a slow-motion sunrise.

Tracklist:
1 Sudden Dream 3:00
2 Mistral Moon (Illuminated Version) 5:24
