(malaventura 01) MalaventuraLabel: Malaventura

Format: MP3
Released: 18 Oct 2009
Genre: Electronic
Style: Hip Hop, Instrumental, Jazz, Dark Ambient

Meanwhile I finnish the next EP “Earth/Tierra” (last chapter of the “Inner planets” series) here is a little gift to everyone to enjoy malaventura music, discover how everything started…
Released in the Summer of 2003 and re-released now under Creative Commons license, this record was a compendium of track selected from the earlier works of the spanish musician, Malaventura. Produced between 2000 and 2003, mainly with the mythical Akai Mpc2000 and a bunch of vinyls from the flea markets, here is an example of sampledelia, mixing hip-hop with jazz or samba, put in in the same game the tijuana brass and a record of religious chants or marrying the batucada with dark ambient. Simply delightful.

"Sed non Satiata" by Bloody Mary feat. Argenis Brito

Bloody Mary’s ‘Black Pearl’ made quite a splash this summer, receiving a storm of praise from DJs and critics alike – especially impressive considering it was her debut album, as well as the first full-length record on Contexterrior. Awarded 4 out of 5 stars from DJ Mag and Resident Advisor, and getting play from a wide cast of DJs (Tiefschwarz, Adam Beyer, Luciano and so on), ‘Black Pearl’ has set itself apart as contender for techno album of the year! One of the standout tracks was “Sed non Satiata”, marked by its latino flair and gritty spoken word from Argenis Brito (vocalist for Señor Coconut’s touring band as well as a producer in his own right with releases on Cadenza).

mnml ssgs mx40: dasha rush

mx40 has been a long time coming. when we first began working on this series early last year, one of the first people we decided to try was dasha rush. i'd first heard about dasha in a RA interview with dozzy, and since then had been keen to discover more. so i emailed her about doing a mix, but never got a reply. earlier this year, it was really bugging me. i felt like dasha had to be in the mnml ssgs series. her sounds really belong here. so i decided to email her again. this time she replied. she had never got my first email (the spam filter was obviously working well). lucky i tried again, as she agreed, and has come up with something special that perfectly encapsulate what we are trying to do.

the other reason i am really excited about these mixes is that i strongly feel dasha rush is one of the most criminally under-rated people in techno. over the last couple of years she been releasing some serious techno through fullpanda records, and i'd strongly suggest checking her productions if you don't know her work. dasha has the key qualities we look for when chasing people for ssg mixes: a powerful, distinctive and unique voice, someone looking forward. and all these characteristics are strongly reflected in the 2 mixes she has kindly done for us.

(RB 074) Astrowind - Kurland

Astrowind - Kurland
Label: Resting Bell
Catalog#: RB074
Format: 15 x File, MP3, 320 kbps
Country: Germany
Released: 30 Oct 2009
Genre: Electronic
Style: Experimental, Ambient
Credits: Artwork By - Grisha Kochenov
Producer - Kriipis Tulo
Recorded By - Kriipis Tulo , Mahi Bukimi

It seems like Astrowind are having the most constant release-frequency on Resting Bell. One release a year, always around September and October. It is the third release on Resting Bell, after “Somewhere The Music Had Been Played“ in September 2007 and “Der Leuchtturm“ in October 2008. They also released on 12rec and Electrosound/Musica Excentrica.
“Kurland” contains 15 pieces and has a total duration of over 60 minutes, a real longplayer. Kurland is the german name for one of the cultural and historical regions of Latvia (in english: Courland). So you have scenic titles like “Kurland“, “Nebel”, “Sounds Of The Shores” but also pieces about aerospace and deep sea. Compared to the older Astrowind-releases the new work sounds a bit deeper and adult. You still find the synth-drones and the noises and glitches but everything is arranged very focused, very sublime. Every element is set very sensible and well chosen.
And again Grisha Kochenov did a really impressive artwork.

Tracklist:
1 Kurland 5:20
2 Nebel 7:06
3 Kuppel 7:02
4 Sounds Of The Shores 5:52

(ISO50BLOG) Music Exclusive: Free Mp3 EP

ISO50BLOG
Music Exclusive: Free Mp3 EP

Date: 08 Oct 2009
Cover by Alex Cornell

Most of the summer I have been going to shows almost 3 or 4 times a week and i’ve probably seen these 4 musicians (Shigeto, Mux Mool, Mingus Rude, and Mogi Grumbles) the most and all of them I noticed at some point would play a cover or edit of a song that they really liked and this is collection of those songs for the ISO50 blog for free folks.
Shigeto takes the classic by Astrud Gilberto and takes the Flying Lotus approach and gives it this great marriage of where gorgeous and head nodding meet.
Mingus Rude might be the newest to the bunch here, he is also Charles Trees for any of you that follow the Moodgadget label. To be honest I think this Fleetwood Mac edit might be the best i’ve ever heard of Fleetwood Mac, it never goes too noisy but just stays on this slower tip and just makes the original abit more for the dance floor.
We definitely needed this track for this EP from Mux Mool which was a crowd pleaser every time I heard it being played. Brian slows down the very popular song and makes it his own with his signature mixture of Mux Mool synths & hip-hop mashed together.
If you’ve been outside and to anything social this spring then you’ve heard this MGMT song plenty of times, Mogi Grumbles takes it to Justice cut up disco land and rides the track off into the sunset for peak hour play.
Posted by Jakub

Tracklisting:
1. Astrud Gilberto – Berimbau (Shigeto edit)
2. Fleetwood Mac – Dreams (Mingus Rude edit)
3. Stardust – Music Sounds Better With You (Mux Mool Remix)
4. MGMT – Electric Feel (Mogi Grumbles Remix)

(ACP 062) Koen Park - The Lazy Burden

Format: 6 x File, MP3, 320 kbps
Country: Ireland
Released: 26 Oct 2009
Genre: Electronic
Style: Breakbeat, IDM

Music By - Koen Park

"The Lazy Burden was made over about four or so days in my dear ma's garage in South London, Bellingham to be precise, edited in my Tokyo apartment a little while after. I don't know when but probably a few years ago now. Its probably going to be the last Koen Park album to be honest, unless I have a massive change of heart and finances! The whole point for the Koen Park project was just to celebrate my heap of junky musical gear and have lots of fun. It's provided that and so much more but unfortunately to fund my labels I have had to sell off that garage full of drums, guitars, keyboards, computers and weird oddities. I no longer have the time to bend my casios either, so these are the sad obvious reasons.
I think this album, more than all the others, is more 'garage', not in genre, but in its creativity. Whilst I spent some time producing the other Koen Park work, this stuff is pretty much first time played drums, guitars, violins, oddities, electronic machines and samplers into my four track fostex tape recorder...then processed into my laptop a wee bit. Limited production at best and I make no apologies for this. That Koen Park was able to let me just rock out a bit, feel free and not worry about recording quality compared to my 'solo' works, I am most thankful for.
Its not about too much I guess, but does point to my laziness, or at least feelings of it. If I do nothing in a day I feel like its a burden of laziness when the truth is probably quite different. Nonetheless this work is inspired by feelings of laziness, staying in bed most of the day, obsessive behaviour, surviving off vitamins and drinking far too much coffee so that I get the shakes, grind my teeth and go back to bed. I'll then go and make music, in this weird, off-kilter state.
Final note is that I asked Ed Cookson to do the artwork. Ed is an insanely talented animator, programmer, musician and artist who runs The Sancho Plan project, more info here: http://www.thesanchoplan.com/ - or for more info about Ed himself: www.edcookson.com - He also happens to be one of my closest truest friends. Years ago I moved back to my hometown, Oxford, living with Ed and making music together with another very close friend of ours, Tom. Over the years, Tom and Ed have taught me a heck of a lot about electronic music and this album, as with all the Koen Park really, is for them. I'd also like to give a special thanks to Paul and the Acroplane crew as they have been huge supporters of this work and run a superb label.
Much love to all. Peace." - Ian Hawgood.

(BSOG 0004) CM aka Creative — Classic Material Vol. 3: UI Radio

CM aka Creative — Classic Material Vol. 3: UI Radio
Label: BlocSonic
Catalog#: BSOG0004
Format: File, MP3, FLAC
Released: Oct 2009
Style: Hip Hop

Hip-hop is an incredibly diverse musical genre that has a bad reputation no thanks to the American mainstream branch of it. People who write-off hip-hop as idiotic, materialistic, violent or misogynist are only getting a small slice of what it’s about. Since hip-hop has become international there are a wide array of ideas about what hip-hop should be today in 2009 and beyond. Anyone who has ever enjoyed the music will gladly give you their opinion about what “real” hip-hop is. Truth be told, after 30 plus years of existence, there is no “real” hip-hop. Hip-hop emcees, DJs and producers come from all walks of life. With such a wide variety of backgrounds, there can be no definitive hip-hop sound. Since there can be no definitive sound, there’s no reason to disregard hip-hop music that uses classic New York blueprints as the jump off for something fresh and new. Just as there’s a place for rock artists to try and capture a classic 60s and 70s vibe in their new recordings, there’s certainly a place for hip-hop producers, DJs and emcees to try and capture a vibe that’s widely regarded as classic.

With “Classic Material Vol. 3: UI Radio”, CM aka Creative, his various collaborators and producers all present to you hip-hop that’s both new and classic. Musically it reflects back to an early/mid 90s sound, topically, it captures all that a young, struggling and striving American emcee has on his mind. It’s the 3rd part in a series of releases which began at the netlabel Random Flow.

When it became clear to CM that Random Flow had become inactive, he approached me about releasing Vol. 3 through blocSonic. Having enjoyed both Vols. 1 & 2, I was instantly interested. I hope you’ll enjoy this release as much as I do. If you dig it, be sure to check out the previous volumes.

Thanks to CM for coming to blocSonic. Thanks to you for downloading and enjoying. As always, share this release with anyone and everyone.

This is easy to guess just from hearing their music: Kassem Mosse’s tracks have the dusty, rough edged feel of an all-analog set-up, while Mix Mup’s material is consistently raw and clangy, with his own New Wave vocals giving it all a charming whiff of throw-back. Of the all the musical sentiments the two producers share, one of the most potent is their longing for a time (namely, the 90’s) when nightclubs provided an outlet for more challenging, un-danceable electronic music. This is the raison d’être behind Chilling the Do, a musical project that combines records, field recordings and mixed media snippets to gleefully antagonistic effect. LWE Podcast 33 offers an exclusive and abridged version of what the duo might unfurl in a nightclub over the course of several hours. It’s dark, campy yet deeply compelling, and as they’ll be the first to admit, not for everyone.

(WM 099) The Family Simpson - Montague's Lunchtime Speciale

The Family Simpson - Montague's Lunchtime Speciale

Format: 11 x File, MP3, EP, 192 kbps
Country: Netherlands
Released: 29 Sep 2009

Imagine being holed up in a strange bleak industrial estate on the edge of what appears to be an eerily deserted town where bars shine desolate, their signs promising “music here tonight” without any sense of irony. This is where Montague started, sketching lyrics on digital photographs in late November when the mall closed and the entertainment retreated quickly to their homes. The fact they rarely shut the curtains or indeed their doors only served to inspire more...

Acoustic guitars, electro beats, harmonies, keyboards and samples abound in well-crafted tales from the binary brain of a domestic robot on the edge of madness. Ever seen a ghost? In a can of soup? Hear the story on this album and find out if our hero makes it to the morning. What do the harpies sing in the quarry? Is there a reason lone divers don't always kick for the surface?

The Family Simpson is a 31 year old meddler who loves tangents. His music has been around for nearly a decade and he is not out of ideas or stories yet. When he is not warping samples he attempts to give his family a well rounded musical education in the completely obscure and teaches renewed appreciation of 20th century technology. At times his songs sound as beautiful as lemonade soaking through a summer dress. At other times his music sounds like a kettle being thrown around in a fridge.

RA.177 Sandwell District

Function lays down the Sandwell District style on this week's RA podcast.

Over the space of the last four years, Sandwell District have managed to carve out a place in the hearts of techno fans worldwide with their austere minimalist sound aesthetic. The label was actually founded by Birmingham-based Peter Sutton (AKA Female) back in 2002, but lay stagnant until it was revitalised with two releases from Sutton three years later. It has since developed into an international effort, with the Sandwell artist roster sharing the label managing responsibilities.

One member of their American wing is David Sumner (AKA Function), who got his first break via a trio of techno twelves for Damon Wild's Synewave imprint. Sumner then went on to launch his own label under the Infrastructure banner, releasing a flurry of his own material before getting in contact with Sutton's Downwards bedfellows Regis and Ian J. Richardson to sign some of their tracks. Their relationship has since grown, with Sumner becoming a fully-fledged member of their techno alliance and using it as a platform for his claustrophobic Sähkö-esque minimalism and bleakly hypnotic warehouse techno. For this RA podcast, Regis and Sumner picked the tracks, while Sumner did the mixing, and, as you might expect, it's a journey deep into the world of techno.
