Guanxi is an alias of DS1984 from South Korea, and today Pixel, his debut album of this newly acclaimed project, is presented exclusively on top-40.org.
Almost all songs on Pixel are based on an improvisation, then digitally cropped, spliced, diced and overdubbed. Subsequently, they are combined to create some form of coherency - reminiscent of mosaicism, an experimental and flotsam prism of production, something of a transitional state of mind. Stimulated by organic performances, which feature natural recordings taken and manipulated to form an exploration of composition, Guanxi focuses on the difference between natural and digital acoustics. Another point of interest in his work is the investigation of the myriad of errors arising from analog and digital systems. Common for all of Guanxi's artistic endeavors is a fascination of working on the limits of technologies when finding new material, pushing computers to the limit to obtain an aesthetic that emphasizes the imperfections of modern technology.
Pixel leads you to a drifting, encompassing musical travel - you're carried away with a lofty, almost spiritual grandeur of a spring morning hymns and fabled sweetness of meditative ringing bells, dissolved in a glitchy vibration. In contrast, you witness a swing of the cosmological pendulum, a never-ending story of a subtle and hidden beauty of environmental acoustic reiterations, charming and alerting at the same time. The extreme tenseness of seemingly relaxing compositions, the elastic bounciness of innermost subtle melodies makes the overall impression so sleepy, tidy and sedative yet intense and arousing at the same time - the unforgettable and so uncommonplace experience for an overflowed ambient stream of our musical landscape today. Time is a strange thing. Two and a half years ago (65 releases ago, in netlabel-speak) Resting Bell released offthesky’s “rare decay“. A timeless and beautiful 4 song EP. I didn’t hesitate a second when Jason Corder asked me if I’d be interested in a re-release of his musically related “du-soleil” EP which was originally released via atmoworks back in 2007.
“du soleil” is not only fully remastered, but it is also extended with three fine remixes from Darren Mcclure, Billy Gomberg and offthesky himself. So all in all around 54 minutes of pure bliss – not really an EP anymore I suppose. As I listened to “du soleil” it was hard for me to believe that this work is even dated. It sounds fresh, gentle and bright with the same timeless quality, you can find in all of Jason’s releases. “du soleil” is a very calm ambient-work with many subtle melodies and musical ideas hiding inside.
Last but no least, the three additional remixes are quite stunning: Darren McClure’s rework presents a multifaceted structure of evolving and lush tonal climates. Billy Gomberg brings a moody and diffused interpretation with subtle tone resting upon a bed of ash like analog texture. Jason’s own perspective is a soft re-synthesis of compositional elements and samples used throughout all 4 pieces in “du soleil”. This group of additional treats, makes the perfect landing for a work that certainly stems from somewhere above.

so, spring is upon us with chirping birds and new dawn that is here to greet us to the premiere of Twin - the first tonAtom release from South Korea. however, despite the modulating sunbeams, it might still be bitterly cold, especially at night.
with reference to his release, Fescal presents the first three tracks exhibiting shadowy sketches, defying customary song writing paradigms that leave the tracks as the acoustic equivalent to movie stills. the beautiful "asteroidea" is the first in a row of three full-length tracks, flattering our ears, followed by the crackling-lubricious "sunday morning" and culminating in the ‘granular hymn’ (if this term does not exist yet, it has to be coined now) "resorption".
the productions of Twin are relaxed, palatial and precise - requiring a focused ear, who is in turn rewarded with an immense set of different moods, colours, timbres and settings. there are almost no percussive elements, but you won’t miss them, because they are not needed even when you are actively looking for them. instead, visions of nobly woven atmospheric river emerge, that often de-liquifies every now and then into river of granular ice.
For those looking to fie Fescal’s artistry in a particular class or group, you might stick the general label: ambient to this EP which, would be similar to labeling a moonlight gourami with the label‚ animal.

«Adam Michalak is a polish musician who is doing deep ambient from some time, using a blend of synthesized sounds and field recordings.
'Seven Colors' is a gentle collection of very beautiful pieces that Michalak composed during a period of a year and a half, until May 2009. There are some tracks clearly based on specific field recordings picked out carefully by the musician but most of them are very varied in terms of textures and composition. Some are a bit dramatic, emotional and even a bit thick while some others are more ethereal, dreamy and translucid.

Nest is a project of fellow pianists and record label operators Otto Totland (Deaf Center / Type Records) and Huw Roberts (Serein). They became friends when they were members of the Miasmah free netlabel. This self-titled EP is their first work publicly released. It is apparently no longer available through Serein since their 2009 rebuild, but has been remastered and incorporated into the album RETOLD. The recording is too good to fade into obscurity, so it lives again now at the WFMU Free Music Archive.

"Both pianists, there is little wonder that after exploring a plethora of musical styles, the two find themselves most at home writing traditionally structured pieces, with the ivories a major element throughout. The EP demonstrates clearly the innate ability the two have for song writing, borrowing from the world of film soundtracks and contemporary classical composers to craft delicate instrumental compositions.
"Alongside their favoured instrument can be variously heard the plucked strings of the Welsh harp, violins, woodwind instruments, field recordings, percussion and a heady dose of mind wobbling effects.
