RA.190 DJ Stingray

190 DJ Stingray

The Urban Tribe leader flexes his turntable talents on this week's RA podcast.

Sherard Ingram has been an active member in Detroit's electronic music community for nearly 25 years now, stretching back all the way to his first release as NASA on cult Detroit imprint Express Records alongside Scan 7's Trackmaster Lou. Never shy of a collaboration, Ingram spent much of the '90s teaming up with Carl Craig, Anthony 'Shake' Shakir and Kenny Dixon Jr. to create a rich downtempo sound as Urban Tribe on James Lavelle's Mo Wax label, with culminated in the release of 1998's much-lauded The Collapse of Modern Culture album. He was then recruited to be the tour DJ for Drexciya in their final days, taking to the decks as DJ Stingray and masking his face from the audience, something he continues to do for all of his DJ appearances.

In recent years, his production work—as DJ Stingray, Mystic Tribe A.I., and Urban Tribe—has focused much more on his solo talents, and is now grounded in the futuristic electro style that is associated with his DJ sets. If anything, Ingram's skills behind the desk are improving with age, as demonstrated by last year's Social Engineering EP, which contained "tracks that transcend genre and time" according to RA's Richard Brophy. 2009 also saw Ingram launch his Micron Audio label with the digitally released First Wave collection of tracks from Annie Hall, Mariska, Kon and himself amongst others, and it looks like 2010 will be a busy year for the imprint, what with the vinyl release of First Wave along with a multitude of additional 12-inches. We caught up with Sherard by e-mail to ask him about the mix, his thoughts about the electro genre and his collaborations with Drexciyan compadre Gerald Donald, AKA Heinrich Mueller.

Podcast 157 - Traxx

For our first podcast of 2010 I’m proud to present one of the finest DJs around - Traxx. For me, he embodies the true spirit of dance music - raw, unbridled energy and the unrelenting ability to play great records that you’ve never heard before. His Nation imprint, and work alongside the likes of James T Cotton keeps the analogue side of house alive, and his Chicago heritage means that the weird, early 80’s proto-industrial and synthpop sits nicely with the more hypnotic elements of acid and what he terms “jak beat”. This is an old recording and there’s no tracklist, but hope you enjoy it.

Tracklisting
Ali Renault - Running on Vapours (Moustache)
LDR 05 - Braving the Benthic (Lunar Disko)
Heinrich Dressel - Galba Imprimatur (Strange Life)
Novamen - Kapotte Kachel (Disco Praline)
Marshall Jefferson - Ride the Rhythm (Trax)
DJ Kaos - Kosmischer  Ruckenwind (Clone Loft)
Walter jones - I am Loved (Permanent Vacation)
Analogous Doom - Virus Loaded (Minimalrome)
Traxx mix - NO TRACKLISTING AVAILABLE
Johann Johannsson - Dying City (NTOV)
Monolake - Avalanche (Imbalance Computer Music)
Cheap and Deep - Deep in the Feeling (Morgan Geist remix)
Trus’me - Need a Job (Fat City)
Samuli Kempli - Rymd (Time to Express)
Matt Chester - Ghostwritten (11th Hour)
Jeff Mills - Fantasia (React)

LWE Podcast 39: Basic Soul Unit

Podcast 39: Basic Soul Unit

As Basic Soul Unit, Toronto’s Stuart Li has earned a reputation as something of a producer’s producer. Combining the rough-hewn trackiness of underground techno with hazy atmospherics of deep house (not to mention a healthy pinch of low-end and DFA-style synth wackiness), his releases for labels like New Kanada and Mathematics have shown they can play chameleon in practically any discerning record bag. But 2009, which saw his “Dank” single released by Philpot and his track “Things Pass” included in Ostgut Ton’s Panorama Bar 02 EP, scraped away at Li’s underground status, raising the bar on his studio prowess while placing Basic Soul Unit on a whole host of new radars. Whether you call it a 2009 victory lap or harbinger of a stellar 2010 to come, LWE’s 39th podcast, an exclusive mix of heavy, organic, and thoroughly trippy house grooves, gives us a rare and tasty showcase of Li’s DJ chops.

Tracklist:
01. Lawrence, “Miles” [Mule Electronic]
02. Thomas Brinkmann, “Isch” (Soulphiction Remisch) [Petite]
03. Rainer Trueby, “Ayer’s Rock” [N/A]

RA.180 Dor

RA.180 Dor

Laid's label manager works the wax on this week's RA podcast.

At a time when the phrase "digital exclusive" seems to be an all too common occurrence amongst house and techno imprints, Hamburg's Dial imprint have decided to go against the grain, spawning a new sub-label focusing strictly on vinyl-only releases. The man behind the venture is Berlin-based Israeli, Dor Levi, who first came into contact with the Dial crew while he was living and throwing club nights in Tel Aviv a couple of years ago. Named as such due to their low cover charge, his Cheap Friday parties brought Dial mainstays like Efdemin, Carsten Jost, Lawrence and Pantha Du Prince to his home city, with Dor always expressing a desire to have them stay for a few days rather than flying straight in and out.

It was during these extended stays that their friendship blossomed, and when Dor expressed his desire to take his DJing further, the collective were happy to oblige, offering their help and support if Dor made the move to Berlin. It goes without saying that he jumped at the chance, becoming part of the extended Dial family and regularly getting invited to join them behind the decks at their Panorama Bar residency. Their working relationship was taken one step further with the launch of the Laid imprint this year, which has so far featured deep house rollers from Rick Wade, RNDM and John Roberts, offering a fresh take on the American house sound of yore. This week's RA podcast is only Dor's second recorded mix (his first won him a DJing spot for Tel Aviv's Pacotek club night), and sees him showcase his influences from both sides of the Atlantic. We caught up with Dor via e-mail to ask him about the mix, his home country and Laid's vinyl-only stance.

Talking Shopcast with Yore Records - Kez YM

Little White Earbuds
Talking Shopcast with Yore Records - Kez YM

Welcome to the latest edition of our series of interviews and mixes affectionately titled Talking Shopcasts. The majority of media and fan attention gets showered on the artists who create the music we love to listen to/DJ with/dance to, and for good reason. But without the hard work, keen ears and business savvy of label staff, we’d be stuck only streaming tracks on their websites. For today’s installment, we focus on Yore Records of Cologne. If deep house has been one of the big stories in recent dance music, Yore has surely curated some of its finest and most lasting moments, doing so with an eclectic range that defies narrow definitions of “deep.” Spearheaded by Andy Vaz — the man behind the Background and A Touch Of Class labels, and a formidable producer in his own right — Yore aims for timeless sounds. Putting out records from all-time greats like Rick Wade has been a big part of the program, but so has Vaz’s keen ear for new talent. Tracks like Kez YM’s “Washing My Soul” and Trackleton’s “Traditional Folk Song” could masquerade as beloved classics twenty years deep, but their fresh approaches and distinct voices transcend imitation or even homage. In the interview below, Vaz discusses Yore’s goals and values, minimal and deep, and the potential value of adding friends on MySpace. To “deepen” your understanding of the label, we’re extremely pleased to host an exclusive mix from Kez YM, featuring music from Yore comrades, influences, and contemporaries. Want more Yore? Be sure to turn back to LWE’s very first podcast, an exclusive mix from Terrence Dixon, and check back soon for further spoils of our talk with Vaz.
